Nearly a year after enacting a law that allows authorities to confiscate the cars, cash and other property of people charged with misdemeanor crimes, some Rensselaer County legislators who voted for the law are having some second thoughts.
After supporting the law primarily as a tool to zero in on drug dealers, some lawmakers say they were surprised to see the first high-profile targets turn out to be people accused of trying to patronize prostitutes or buy drugs during undercover police ``sting'' operations in Troy.
``We were told and sold a bill of goods that this law would help prosecutors deal with drug dealers standing on the corners,'' said county Legislator Louis Polsinello Jr., D-Rensselaer, the legislature's minority leader and a member of the Law and Public Safety Committee. ``To date, I have not seen one crime …
